1880-malaria.jpgCharles Louis Alphonse Laveran, a French army surgeon stationed in Algeria, identifies the cause of malaria – parasites. In 1897, Ronald Ross, a British officer in the Indian Medical Service, determines that the malaria parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes. Both Leveran and Ross later receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
