Lifestyle Diseases on the Rise
Lifestyle diseases are a leading cause of death to residents of developed nations. In 2012, 347 million people worldwide have diabetes, up from 30 million in 1985. This rapidly growing, yet preventable disease, is linked to changing diets and exercise, and is responsible for 1.5 million deaths. Tobacco use is responsible for 6 million deaths each year.
In 2014, researchers find that over 2 billion people (nearly one-third of the world population) is overweight or obese, raising the risk for increases in many diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. The rise in obesity risk is linked to modernization and the prevalence of more processed foods.
