Gunpowder Discovered

China

850-gunpowder-discovered.jpgA Chinese alchemist accidentally discovers the recipe for gunpowder while trying to develop “an elixir for immortality.” The invention of gunpowder changed the way wars were fought and borders were drawn during the Middle Ages. By 919, there is evidence of the Chinese using a “continuous flame thrower,” marking the first use of gunpowder warfare. And, by the Hundred Years’ War (1339-1453), the gunpowder-powered cannon comes into general use.
