Major Civilizations
Europe, China, India, Middle East
There are two major world civilizations at the beginning of the first millennium, located in China (the Han Dynasty) and around the Mediterranean (the Roman Empire). An imperial census in China counted approximately 60 million people. One estimate of the Roman Empire’s (31 BCE-476 CE) population at its height is 45 million. However, other historians set the figure twice as high, suggesting how imprecise population estimates of early historical periods can be.
